Mystic Seaport Fourth of July

Okay, so it's been about a month since TB and I went on vacation but we sitll have tons of pictures to share! Here is a new slide show made from pictures we took at Mystic Seaport of the Fourth of July. It was a perfect day for a parade and celebration: it wasn't hot and it was overcast for most of the day. We did get rain but it wasn't until after the parade and after lunch -- and we found another place to explore! More on that next time!

Not in the job description

Heidi works for a rather large grocery food chain. I know there are unsanitary goings-on in any place that handles food but when you work right there (or are related to someone who is), sometimes the grossness can get to you. I haven't bought any fresh salad from this store after stories Heidi told me. Who wants salad when you know flies have been roaming around on it depositing whatever it is they leave whenever they land? UGH.

Lately, there's been an increasing mouse problem that has something to do with the way food is disposed. The cans the food should go into are maggoty and filthy and really need to be sanitized or just plain replaced. Management keeps sending the baggers--lowest of the low on the totem pole and mostly teenage kids--out to clean these things. Heidi tells me the baggers stand around talking until enough time has gone by that they could claim they did clean the containers and then they go back in. Who can blame them? What 16 year old wants to clean out a crusty maggoty garbage container?

Anyway, for whatever reason, mice have been coming into the store and the managers' solution has been to set traps.

Last night, Heidi found a baby mouse in one of the traps. She thought it was dead and was disposing it (and the other dead mice) when it moved and she realized it was barely alive. It would not be for long and so she killed it. When she came home, she broke down and wept long and hard. Even though she knew she was ending its suffering she was very upset about what she did.

Some might say, it was just a mouse, just a pesky nasty critter and of no significance. Still, when you love animals as Heidi does, it must have been a traumatic thing to do.

She wants to find another job. I don't blame her.

Olde Mistick Village

On Tuesday, July 3 our original plan was to visit the aquarium but we decided to stop at Olde Mistick Village first. What a charming place to shop! We ended up spending almost the whole day there and decided to save the aquarium for another day. When we got back to our hotel, TB took a much needed nap and I decided to go for a swim in the so-called heated pool. It didn't matter that the water wasn't heated--it was very refreshing!

Here is one of the pictures I took at Olde Mistick Village. I took frequent breaks from shopping to take pictures--especially of the duckies.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_EerFUTvma_s/RppNEvUZFxI/AAAAAAAAAF8/iWKihOAwnI8/s320/IMG_1758.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5087463472885208850" />

You can't see any of them in the picture above but if you want to see them and the others I took, click here.

S.S. Sabino

TB and I thoroughly enjoyed our cruise on the S.S. Sabino. I think I wrote earlier that it's one of the last coal-fired passenger steamships still running? It was built in 1908 in Maine and for years ferried passengers and freight. Now it's been designated a historic landmark and it is located at the Mystic Seaport. TB and I didn't get a look at the engine, which is exposed and you can see it running if you want to, because we were too busy relaxing on the bow and taking many pictures. These are just a few favorites.

Mystic Seaport

These pictures are just a fraction of the shots TB and I took at Mystic Seaport on Monday, July 2nd. It was a beautiful day, warm but not humid. We walked for hours, until our feet ached and our arthritis flared. We didn't want to stop, just wanted to take everything in. At the end of the day, we went on the S.S. Sabino, which is one of the last few coal operated steamboats still running.

The pictures in the slide show go up to about that point. There's still more to come!

First stop on our vacation

Boy, there sure is a lot to do after you get back from a vacation! Now I know where the expression comes from: "I need a vacation from my vacation!" Still, I am not complaining as we had such a wonderful time. Before I go out to one of my appointments I wanted to share a couple of pictures I took.

One of the coolest parts of our vacation was that TB and I felt free to make side trips and visit places on the spur of the moment. We both enjoy exploring wherever we are.

On our way up on 95N, we pulled over to use the restrooms at one of those places that has tourist information and brochures. We'd seen mention of a castle in a Connecticut guide booklet we'd received from AAA and it sounded like just the place to go. According to the book, it wasn't that far away from the rest stop. I asked the volunteers about the castle and they enthusiastically told me it was worth a visit and that we should ferry across the river.

Sounded right up our alley! So we took a little detour and stopped in East Haddam to visit William Gillette's castle. We wanted to take the ferry and so these are the first pictures I'm sharing before I have to go to my doctor's appointment.

Here we are in line to get on the ferry to cross the Connecticut River. We didn't mind the wait--we were in no hurry!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_EerFUTvma_s/RpOptaC_JOI/AAAAAAAAAE8/QoHoogEAo4A/s320/114_1478.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5085595001782478050" />

In fact, I got to take several pictures of whatever caught my interest. I liked the wildflowers growing along the side of the road and here's how one of them came out.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_EerFUTvma_s/RpOpuaC_JQI/AAAAAAAAAFM/iqnWg3pB_-M/s320/114_1481.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5085595018962347266" />

I even took pictures of just your regular average bushes!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_EerFUTvma_s/RpOqcaC_JTI/AAAAAAAAAFk/nmClYugRtfE/s320/114_1482.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5085595809236329778" />

After a wait of maybe 15 minutes, we got to the ferry. It's not very big but I think it could fit up to a dozen cars.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_EerFUTvma_s/RpOpuKC_JPI/AAAAAAAAAFE/NfAhQ7YQ4e0/s320/114_1485.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5085595014667379954" />

We were parked smack dab in the middle and towards the rear so we couldn't take great pictures but we sure enjoyed the ride!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_EerFUTvma_s/RpOqcqC_JUI/AAAAAAAAAFs/a9zwGzAqXP8/s320/114_1489.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5085595813531297090" />

Quick Update on Little T & Other Stuff

I just asked TB to turn off the comments for this blog. I'm sorry to have to do that but until I find a way to screen out the spammers without having to go through and delete all the junk, I just have to do it. I just deleted 275 junk comments and MT only allows me to go at a 20-at-a-time pace so you can imagine how time consuming that is! And I have to delete junk comments at least twice a day so that they don't build up!

I meant to update about our little Tomas. He is doing so much better! He willingly put on the nebulizing mask at the doctor's office when I last posted, thank goodness, and so he got a full treatment. Linda's been giving him his meds and he's been doing much better! He still hacks a little bit but the meds are really helping!

This picture was taken at the restaurant this morning.

In An Emergency...

I'm worried about our little T. Linda took him to the doctor yesterday because he was wheezing and his breathing was labored. It turns out one of his tubes fell out and that ear became infected. The scarier part was that they did a pulse-ox test and his O2 level was only 90%. They had to do a nebulizing treatent. Up until that point, Tomas was very cooperative says Linda but when the nurse came at him with a mask, he began to fight and scream.

It got so bad, Linda says, she told the nurse to stop and leave. Linda held the mask by Tomas's nose and the nurse kept haranging her, saying you're not doing it right! Linda felt that at least this way, Tomas was getting some benefit although the nurse was saying you're wasting the medicine. Okay, now, by then Linda had told the nurse that T is on the autistic spectrum. Aren't pediatric nurses supposed to know what to do when they have a special needs child? Surely there is another way to do this. Tomas has never allowed anything on his head or face, no hats, fake noses or what have you.

Anyway, after 3 hours, they were finally able to come home. By then T's pulse-ox was up to 93%, still low. Linda told me they would have to return in the morning (this morning). So they've been gone almost 3 hours again and I'm wondering what's happening. Will they have to send T to the ER? I'm very worried.

Tomas At Play

Today when Tomas sat on my lap and watched me play Chuzzles, I heard him say, "blue, blue!" Oh boy, was I happy! I'd heard from Kennan that Tomas can run and jump over an object and that he was saying blue and yellow but hadn't seen or heard yet myself. But as I moved my cursor over a blue Chuzzle, he said it and it was clear as a bell, "Blue, blue". His teacher has written us notes that he is progressing quickly through his program and can match colors and shapes. He's still fairly "self-directed" but he's getting much better at complying with requests we make of him.

At dinner time, I was remembering what the early intervention teacher said once about having Tomas sit in a booster seat so that his feet would touch the chair. It's supposed to help a child feel centered. Tomas doesn't like his booster seat but he does like his little chair and table so we moved it close to the big dining room table and it seemed to work. He had both feet on the floor and his own table to sit at and he just seemed much more comfortable.

For some reason, putting on his pants and/or shirt remains an issue. We haven't quite figured that one out all together. I know he prefers his pants to have snaps and zippers. Maybe that's why he's reluctant to put on jammie bottoms or track pants. As for the shirts--we also know he does not like button down shirts. Polos and tee shirts are fine but not always. We are all a work in progress.

I took pictures of Tomas at play the other day. Click the picture to get the rest of the album!

A whole lot of remodeling going on!

Now that there are 7 of us, we decided the smart thing to do would be divide Heidi's humongous room into two. This way, Billy has a room to live in when he's home and we don't have to make Kristin, Heidi, Linda or Tomas double up with anyone. Heidi cleaned out her room as best she could over the weekend and today came Phase I: taking the bunk bed apart and moving stuff out of the room.

Ready, set, go! To see the pictures I took today click on this pic
