It was a gorgeous day today. TB was scheduled to go to the hospital for pre-op testing. He needed to have his blood drawn, have an EKG done, and an Xray taken. I was worried about his blood sugar but I guess we'll know next week if he can have surgery as scheduled. He sees two doctors on July 6, his internist and the surgeon!
This week Linda goes for a child support hearing. She is just going to be an observer, though, because it is the state suing Kennan. He is scared, thinking that he might lose everything to pay child support. Well, this is what happens! Now if he'd treated Linda well and married her already he wouldn't be in the mess he is in.
Frankly, Linda is better off this way! She can further her education, get decent job training and be so much better off.
And July 4th is on Sunday! I love the fireworks!
A new interim government has been established in Iraq, aiming toward establishing Iraq as a democratic nation.
1. Do you think Iraq will ever see a day when their democratic government works? If so, when?
I am feeling pretty pessimistic about it. A lot of Iraqi people seem to prefer having a conservative religious leader. That wouldn’t be a democracy. It would be similar to the government Iran had when the Ayatollah Khomeini was the leader.
2. Is it right for the U.S. government to spread its brand of democracy to other nations? Why or why not?
Is it right? That is hard to say. Does it work? I don’t know that it does. It seems very similar to what the missionaries did when they travelled to the Hawaiian islands and to Africa and to other places, trying to spread Jesus’ teachings and trying to convert the people to Christianity. Sometimes they were met with outright hostility and sometimes the people seemed to “go along” with it but secretly kept their old ways. I don’t know that trying to spread democracy will have any better luck.
3. Are there any countries the U.S. has invaded and/or helped establish a democracy that you truly consider to be successful.
I can’t think of any. Maybe there are some out there and they’re just not coming to mind?
