Sears repair technicians
Cassie and I have been having trouble with our Frigidaire refrigerator the last few weeks. The refrigerator side wasn't getting cold enough and we had food going bad a lot quicker than it should have. Because we are on a fixed income we had to wait for my pension check to come in before we could call the Sears repair service. Our warranty had run out two years ago (naturally) and we new it would cost us a lot to fix. (it always does!)
I took a look at the problem two weeks ago, and decided that there were two things that could be at fault. The motorized damper between the freezer ($80.00) and the thermostat controller ($75.00) I looked at the parts website two weeks ago to see what the parts would cost and either one would cost about $80.00. Cassie suggested we call the Sears technician instead of just replacing one part at a time and guessing.(She thought it would cost more that way!) So we called Sears and we were told that it would cost $75.00 just for the technician to come out and parts would be extra. Sears gave us a window that the repair tech would be there of between 8:00 AM and 12:00 Noon which as everyone knows is quite an inconvenience but we agreed that it was necessary. The guy came out After 2:00 and we had to call at 12:00 to find out if he was coming at all! He took 10 minutes to diagnose the problem went out to his truck and spent 15 minutes rummaging around out there, then came back in and shocked the living daylights out of me! He said the repair would cost $545.00!
"What!" I said. "I can't afford that kind of money, I'm on Social Security Disability!" He told me the part was $280.00 and the rest was labor. I told him I already looked up the price of the parts and the total of them all was $160.00! He told me they no longer just replace the individual parts, just the sub-assemblies. I said, "Yeah that's because you technicians are getting too lazy to diagnose and replace the small parts and to hell with the consumers." "And while I'm at it, we are all ready paying $75.00 for your house call, it should include the 20 minutes it will take to change out the part! (I had taken the parts out to check them the day before and it took me 20 minutes total. So I knew what to expect.) Why are you going to charge me another $190.00 to change out the module!" He told me the $75.00 was just the service call and that the labor and parts are extra.
I then asked if I could just buy the part from him and install it myself, and he said that he couldn't sell me the parts. He then offered me a coupon good for a $100.00 off on a new refrigerator at Sears. That's when I lost my temper and told him to get the "blank" out of my house! We then called Sears service but I was still too upset to talk coherently or civilly to them so Cassie took over. The down side is we have to call today to see if they will do anything to help us, the upside is that in the meantime I went to the website and ordered a new part. (the thermostat controller) The part had been reduced in price from $75.00 when I checked 2 weeks ago to $29.95 as it was an approved substitute. It should be here tomorrow on Friday. Then I'll see if it was that or the Damper. I hope it is the thermostat, the letter I will send to Sears will be a doozy!
I am going to ask Cassie to call Sears back today because I am still very PO'ed with them and I know I'm going to blow at the slightest provocation!
If we can't resolve this it will be a cold day where the Boogyman lives before we buy any appliances from sears again!
I thought it was quite ironic that two of the Sears logos were contrary to what we encountered:
