The man's side of it!

I have lived in New Jersey for 51 years. I grew up in South Plainfield and GreenBrook. I've lived in Plainfield, Parlin, South Brunswick, Somerville, East Windsor, Perth Amboy, Franklinville, Sewel and New Egypt. I currently own a home in Browns Mills. I have to say this humorous piece hits the nail on the head.

You know you're from South Jersey if...

-You don't "go to the beach", you go "down the shore". (Yup)

-You've had arguments over cheesesteak quality. (always, Pizza too!)

- You've actually found the Echelon Mall. (no)

- You don't understand why there aren't more 24-hour diners elsewhere in the country. (sometimes)

- You know what a Wawa is, and know the location of at least 10 of them. (I know where they all are)

- You know that you should get the hell out of Camden before dark. (Every one knows that)

- You know how to successfully navigate a traffic circle. (I think I'm the only one left who still can)

- You've counted the number of topless bars on the Black Horse Pike. (I haven't done that yet)

- You pronounce "water" "wudder". (my accent still doesn't include wudder)

- You refuse to call Hoagies "subs." (I've been know to call them both)

- You've almost fallen asleep on the parkway, turnpike and I-295 (too darn many times)

- You've lived through hurricanes, nor'easters and fires, but have never seen a tornado, earthquake or volcano. (that's true, some bad floods too)

- You know that ACME is an actual store, not just a Warner Bros. creation. (one can still hope)

- You have mandatory recycling. Enforced by law. (we don't have it yet, thank goodness)

- You've made a meal out of Tastycakes, Herr's potato chips, and Taylor Pork Roll. (chipps and Taylor ham, yup)

- You know New Years is all about the Mummers and the Polar Bear Club (I never liked the Mummers)

- You can go bowling at 1:30 A.M. (been there done that)

- Route 206 doesn't freak you out at night. (not a bit)

- Your mom still loves Bruce Springsteen. (She's from North Jersey and doesn't have a clue)

- You know it can be -10 degrees and 70 degrees in January in the same year. (We're going through that now)

- There's a fruit and vegetable stand down the road. (many of them)

- You will always say "YO", and you'll say it often. (Yo!)

- You go to another state and sit at a gas station wondering when the people will come out to pump your gas. (I've done that just recently)

- You know that no matter how much they put into the Camden waterfront, Camden is still Camden. (It's a big waste of money)

- You think North Jersey is a different state and South Jersey deserves its own secession. (I'll have to agree)

- You have season passes to Great Adventure. (No)

- You know where Olga's Diner is on Rt 70. (Yes)

- You are tired of people not believing you're from jersey because you don't have a New York accent. (There's a big difference)

- You know what "jimmies" are and refuse to call them anything else. (Yo!)

- You have crossed all 5 bridges into Philly at one point in your life. (Yes I have)

- You have a story about the "Hell Hole" ride in Wildwood. (I missed that one though I've been to Wildwood many times)

- You took your report card to Clementon Park for free tickets. (no)

- You know what funnel cake and water ice are and think something is wrong with people who refer to them as
"fried dough" and "slush". (Yo!)

- You've ever driven around aimlessly for hours with your friends saying "So, whatta we doin?" (especially when I was a teen in High School)

- You ever drove all the way to the shore just to walk around for 5 minutes then drive back. (Been there done that)

- You know of at least 3 bars where you know they wouldn't card you. (Yes when I was a Teen before they lowered the drinking age)

- You lived near a "crick" not a creek. (Nope it was always a creek to me)

- You never could figure out which was the Black Horse Pike or The White Horse Pike. (Yo!)

- You know that a "Yield" sign is merely a suggestion. (Heh heh It's only for those pesky New York and Pennsylvania drivers)

- You don't think you have an accent. (Noope)

- Everything is "twenty minutes away". If you ask how long it takes to get any place in South Jersey, the person always says, "about twenty minutes". To get to a mall, "Oh, about 20 minutes". To get to the airport, "Mmm, about 20 minutes." To get from Runnemede to Philly, "Only about 20 minutes". Try it. Only the shore areas take more than "twenty minutes".
They're usually "an hour and twenty minutes."

- You went to StoryBook Land as a kid. (Yes, also Wild West City, Turtle Back Zoo and Trailside Museum)

- Every time someone in Hollywood makes fun of Jersey, you're mad and proud at the same time. (Yo!)

- You describe where you live in reference to how far you are from Cherry Hill. (I've done that)

- You would drop everything you were doing and run to the voting polls right now if you heard we were voting to make North and South Jersey separate states. (Yes)

- You know all of the "back roads" to get everywhere and prefer them to the "Expressway." (Yes)

Well, this is really the pits. TB's been laid off from Cranbury Sheet Metal for the unforseeable future. Work slowed down and pretty much came to a halt 2 weeks ago. At the time, it wasn't such a terrible thing...
